Check out the horses to follow from racing at Ballarat on Tuesday the 13th of February .
We know it has been a while since we posted our horses to follow but we have received a few messages from our loyal followers asking for more, so we are going to make a very good effort at trying to release these more often for you guys.
Our first and only horses to follow publication which we released back in early January was a huge success. Take a look at the results.
Previous horses to follow (Flemington)
- KHULAASA – Finished 2nd at next start ($1.80 place)
- JUST HIFALUTIN – Finished 1st at next start ($3.70 Win)

Of the 5 to run, 3 won and 4 placed overall. Our worst result was an unlucky 4th.
We don’t want to blow our own trumpet too much, but just give you confidence that you’re following the right people.
For those who don’t know, a Blackbook is basically the name given to a punters little book of horses to follow in the future. Every race is full of bad rides, bad luck stories, near misses, and next time’s. A blackbook is aimed at capturing all of these moments and much more.
There are a number of sites who offer you a place to keep track of your horses to follow and they will send you a notification a few days before the horse is due to run. The best and easiest to use is probably punters.com.au, but we would encourage you to just use whichever site suits you best.

We have found 6 horses worth following out of the Ballarat meeting held on the 13th of February 2018.
Race 1 – THINK CATHY:
Started $3.50 in a handy little maiden but didn’t get the race run to suit. Got away well but didn’t have much luck early as a few wanted to kick up underneath her and put some pace into the race. She was kept 3 wide without cover and running into a decent headwind down the back straight. She had to do some work and pressed on to sit outside the leader. She was a sitting duck in the long straight at Ballarat and was entitled to give-in but she fought well to the line considering. The winners came from the back and she was the only front-runner to stay on. Both horses to beat her in this one were both shorter in the market and they look to be pretty decent gallopers, in fact both have headed towards the Tasmanian oaks.
She never puts in a bad run and happy to forgive her for the run today. Shouldn’t be too far away from breaking her maiden.
Wouldn’t want to see her go up in distance yet and would prefer to see her on a more suitable track and in a race where she can have an easier time out in front.
FURNISH was smashed in the betting on debut, $5.50 into $2.40 and ran accordingly. Beat the 2nd horse in by 3/4 of a length but there was a 5 length gap to 3rd place. Sat just off the leader and sprinted home very well when opening up. Tired late but was entitled to. Admittedly the field wasn’t that good but they put a really good time on the clock and he beat them pretty comfortably. He was green as grass in the run home so plenty of improvement in him. Looks a smart one and likely to notch up another victory up in grade. Would be happy to see him stay at the 1200m but would put trust in the stable if they elected to go further.
Also take note of the stewards report: Furnish – shortly after the start attempted to buck and a warning will be placed on the geldings record. Rider Regan Bayliss was fined $400 under the provisions of AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using his whip six times prior to the 100m, which is one time more than permitted. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account the totality of his whip use and that he won the race.
SOMNIUM put in a very big 1st-up run and was not far away from chasing down the smart one Furnish. Ran wide without cover adding merit to the performance. She’s a 3yo filly with plenty of upside and should be breaking the maiden status going off what we saw here. Will definitely be suited by more ground and a 2nd-up win looks a strong possibility if placed well, but that’s highly likely being out of an astute stable (Lindsay Park).
Race 4 – DIAMOND SPINNER:
This mare has been racing well this prep without winning. She sat last of 7 in this race and they absolutely walked the first half of the race. She was still able to put in a huge run and threaten the $1.50 favourite who has performed well in better races than this. Overall time wasn’t great but the last 600m was quick which should be expected with how the race panned out. She unsuccessfully raced over further earlier in her career but might be ready now as a 5-year-old. Has placed at metro level over 1300m so a slight rise in trip might suit. Mare in form and if she gets a tempo more to her liking she’ll be flashing home late next start.
INNOCENT LILY is a mare in good form. Won back-2-back now. Posted a quick time and after being pressured for the lead she just eased a bit to settle 3rd-4th out 4 wide with no cover. Worked home very strongly considering the run in transit, could probably race further now. Slight query on her BM64 grade form, she is much more suited to the 58 grade races but she will have to go up now, in saying that, she carried some weight against the boys here and she is in career best form and likely to get some good value for the rise despite winning 2 in a row now.
Big run working home from the back from LUCKY PROSPECTOR. Being cautious though as he mixes his form and might just race well first-up and fresh. Is only lightly raced for a 6yo but he’s won over a mile so he should be very good next start up in trip. If he gets a fast tempo to suit and stays in 58 grade next start he’d be looking like a pretty good bet.
